Design a Kitchen Floorplan in 3 Simple Steps

Thursday, August 13th, 2009

If you decide that your kitchen needs a fresh look, or perhaps you are moving into a new home and are designing from scratch - you will need to know then best way to go about remodelling your kitchen.  All you will need is a pencil, a tape measure, graph paper and if you feel like doing a really professional job you might want to invest in some kitchen design software.

1) You should begin by taking careful measurements of your entire kitchen space.Be careful to make sure to measure from wall to wall rather than from the edge of the current cabinets.  Using your graph paper, draw out all of the measurements and try to use a scale of one foot or 6 inches to each square on your paper. This will ensure that your floor plan is a reasonably sized representation of what your kitchen will look like.

2) The next step is to carefully measure all of the door and window spaces and include them on your kitchen diagram. If there are any other obscure brick structures in your kitchen (such as the chimney) be sure to include them also. When this has been completed, be sure that you measure and make note of the ceiling height, taking into account any sloping areas of the ceiling.

3) When all of the measurements have been accurately taken down and drawn the next step is for you to design the actual layout.  If you have been using kitchen cad software to draw your diagrams, it is likely that it will also include the facility to place computer models of your desired  appliances on your diagram. The design software will then be able to generate a 3D representation of how your kitchen will look.

If you have been using good old fashioned pencil and paper for your diagram, then it could well be worth investing some money in purchasing some interior design software. Not only will software save you a lot of time and effort in designing your kitchen, but if you have other much larger DIY projects planned then it will help you to redesign and remodel the other rooms in your house.

The Many Ways Bespoke Kitchens Stand For Your Lifestyle As Well As Improve Functionality

Monday, July 6th, 2009

Bespoke in simple terms means some item designed particularly to the buyer’s special orders.  This is usually related to clothing and fashion in the UK, in stark contrast to the off-the-rack ready to wear styles out of the clothing factories.  On the other hand, the term likewise refers to something which is customized for instance bespoke kitchens, personalized accessory such as a wedding ring, and even computer software.

The kitchen is perhaps one of the best areas for remodeling and renovation.  A lot of people consider kitchens as the core of a home.  Meals are cooked here and it is also the venue for family gatherings and dinners.  It is also the setting for celebrations which draw families together.  Therefore, it is probably the perfect place for home improvement as you are not only investing in the efficiency all over the kitchen but also in your relationship with your family.

Therefore what should you consider when remodeling your kitchen?

Budget.  If you are on a tight budget and still you are aware you have to make needed changes in your kitchen such as repainting the cracked walls and maybe replace the fixtures to something more functional and presentable then there are lots of ways you can remodel your kitchen without paying out too much.  If you want to patch up the walls, make it a family affair.  Request the help of your children; it will be another quality time together.  Painted kitchens accomplished by a family certainly make a home sweet home.

Functionality.  In this busy way of life we have, it is vital to work in a very practical environment, and that includes the kitchen.  Kitchen design, furniture, and electrical appliances must be laid out in a manner that movement is comfortable as well as hassle-free.  A quick breakfast is lively by a little too large marble countertop.

Style.  Though style is essential, it should not be regarded as the main concern unless maybe you have a huge budget to use.  There are a lot of styles which you can select from to match your taste.  You may like to have an unconventional and lustrous kitchen, or perhaps a cozy ambiance, or if you like a Victorian kitchen and have money to match it, then let your kitchen speak for your character.

Safety.  In so far as the kitchen is a regular hub of activity in the home, it is likewise the most exposed to several incidents like fire and explosions.  Furnish and design your kitchen with precautions in mind.  Acquire fire-proofed equipment and fire-safe kitchen appliances.  Always observe safety in the kitchen particularly that an unsupervised stove top is the topmost cause of household fires in the US.

Take these pointers into account and you will produce a wonderful kitchen, one which reflects style and functionality.

Redesigning Your Home? Let CAD Show You How

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009

Whether you are looking to redesign your bathroom, bedroom, kitchen or your lounge – good DIY starts with an accurate plan.A good drawing board, a T-square, a few triangles, an architect’s scale, a compass and a selection of good pencils will probably set you back a bit of money.  However, spending a similar amount of money on a good CAD design software package that will allow you to walk through the finished project before you even lift a finger is considered by many to be a better investment.

Put simply, CAD (Computer Aided Design) software is a computer program that allows you to use a mouse or an electronic drawing pad in order to draw objects to exact levels of precision. That object can be anything from a brick to a bookcase and although the CAD software doesn’t draw the object for you, you will have to tell it how wide, how tall and how long it is.The whole process is extremely straightforward and it is very easy to experiment with different dimensions, allowing you to see the proportions of an object and determine whether it is pleasing to the eye.

Much of the power in CAD design software is contained in the special drawing tools that are available to the user.CAD programs will also allow you to zoom into sections of your drawing without losing any of the detail. Most conventional drawing programs will allow the lines to get bigger the further in you zoom.  Perhaps the most effective thing about drawing in CAD software is that you can draw your layout or piece full size and you won’t have to worry about performing any complex scaling on it.Simply let the software perform the calculations and it will then scale everything to fit on your sheet of printer paper!

The colours that you should use for your tiny kitchen should be as follows:-

Use light coloured cupboards with glass doors and add further storage to the inside of doors where you can place tiny bits and pieces ( why not put a spice rack within a door for your spices to be kept in

Creating a Successful Kitchen Design

Sunday, May 24th, 2009

The design of a kitchen is paramount to how well it meets all the wide ranging demands placed on it – its the heart of the home and its design should reflect both the amount of time spent in it, and also should aim to provide an excellent return on investment.

The challenge to any kitchen designer is to use the space available in the optimum way possible, while not losing out on aesthetics. Clutter should be minimized as a start point, and many designers choose to adopt the classic triangle design – allowing the homeowners to move freely and easily between stove, refrigerator and sink in a three sided layout.

When you have decided the basic layout of where key appliances etc will be placed, then is the time to consider whether there are any particular features that are important to you. For example, free standing dining tables are all part of a traditional handmade kitchen style, while an integrated breakfast bar results in a more contemporary kitchen ambiance.

If the kitchen has been designed with ergonomics in mind, it should make it a pleasure to work in. You may wish to consider employing a bespoke kitchen designer, who can ensure that for example, all worktops are are the correct height to avoid back strain etc. While obviously you would want all drawers and cabinets to be easily accessible, don’t forget that if small children are around, items like knives etc should be stores well out of reach.

The decor and lighting in the kitchen all add to the overall ambiance. While natural light should be optimized, possibly with the additional of extra windows, hidden lighting features can also add to the illusion of space. Many designers now use integrated lighting under cabinets and islands, which can create a floating effect while remaining subtle. In addition, the overall colour themes need careful consideration – do you wish to blend or contrast your colours, perhaps with certain areas accented? Its helpful to complement the colours across all the features on your room, linking the walls, worktop, appliances, cabinets and doors.

Overall, not only should your kitchen design reflect your lifestyle and personality, but it should deliver this in a practical and functional way.

Contemporary kitchen design to match your requirements

Friday, May 1st, 2009

Mixing a stunning look and practicality first class bespoke kitchen design aims to match the lifestyles and desires of the kitchen owner.

You may wish just to update your current kitchen, or complete a total transformation with a bespoke designer kitchen. Whichever route you choose, there are a number of things to take into account.

First think about the ambiance and style you are trying to create. Then start thinking about key feature choices such as the type of cabinets, worktops, tiling and appliances. Current trends have been contemporary-feel modern kitchen designs with a sleek look. Alternatively you might aim for a more country and traditional feel.

The second key to a great kitchen design is to fully understand and appreciate the needs of the users of the kitchen.

To do this think about how the room will be used “Will you need a stand-alone eating area? How often are you entertaining guests in the kitchen? How much space do you need for the preparation of food? Do you need an area of the family?” It is quite common for new homes to use a more open plan arrangement where the kitchen flows into the remaining areas in the house. Alternatively you may keep the kitchen completely separate.

Floor space is one of the most important considerations in the design. It is easy to have appliances that are too large for the space. One way to maximise space is too arrange all the cabinets along one wall.

The perfect layout for a sociable kitchen is an L shape with two additional large island units. These island units provide different zones, one for food preparation/cooking and the other for a bar and seating area. This design layout provides several important aspects to a sociable kitchen.

1. a safe, separate area for guests to be entertained away from the cooking and preparation areas.

2. The two islands so the need to walk around long units to get around the kitchen.

3. You can combine the kitchen and living areas together

Homeowners shouldn’t feel constrained by “off the shelf” units, as many companies offer a bespoke kitchen design service which allows you to design your kitchen to your exact specification and needs.

Scottsdale Home Remodeling Disasters!

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

If you are considering Scottsdale home remodeling and do not know what to expect, the job can become a complete nightmare, even the smallest one. The tiniest projects you have planned and easily go over budget and double in time. Deciding to enlist in the labor yourself to save on costs or hiring friends can also have devistating effects. In the following I am going to share a story of my personal experience in what was supposed to be a small project.

My husband and I bought a rental house that was completely redone including a new Scottsdale bathroom design and Scottsdale kitchen design, the only thing left was the garage. The two car garage had once been a two car carport that the previous owner enclosed. The garage was a mess with wires and pipes exposed everywhere, the washer, dryer and water heater were haphazardly placed, the walls are open to the studs and not insulated. Additionally, the ceiling was warped and peeling from the exposure to the elements when it was a carport. When we bought the house we figured we would hire a friend of ours and knock it out in two weekends.

Even with the incompleted garage we purchased the home. After reveiwing the garage layout we came to the conclusion the best value would include building a laundry room while we were finishing the then, skeletal garage. Despite the change in plans, the project took several months to complete rather than at most the one month we planned. Additionally, our friend was only able to work weekends, but not every weekend and it went way over budget from what we originally decided. In the end, the job was not completely finished because we got tired of throwing money into it and the countless hours it was taking him. We ended up finishing the job a year later.

One year from the time we updated the garage, the water heater ceased to work. We had a plumber come out to take a look at it but he said the wiring in the breaker box was no good. So we sent out an electrician to take a look. Much to our dismay, the problem was in the attic and was a blown electrical box for the water heater. It was completely blackened and fried. Somehow a spark ignited and ruined the box. Luckily the sparks didn’t ignite a fire and burn down the house, which we are continually thankful for. The first question the electrician asked us is who worked on our house because it would have never had passed a home inspection with the wiring that was set up. Our only theory is that when our friend moved the water heater for the laundry room, he redid some wiring that was not up to code and could have costs us our house and possibly our tenants lives.

Another issue that we didn’t seem to realize is the damage or awkwardness it would have on our friendship. Now that money and dependability really had become centerstage, the relationship became a little weird. They say you shouldn’t mix friends and business and I think that with the experience I have had, that is good advice. Especially when money is involved and you are paying them.

In the end, what did I gain from that avenue of my life? Firstly, if deciding to elist in cheap labor, understand fully what the consiquences are and don’t hold high expectaions. Also, not to be surprised when you are dishing out 50% or more cash than you originally budgeted for and to plan to go over the alloted time, even double it. When the job is completed, have a home inspector come out to make sure it is up to code. The most important though, is hire a professional in Scottsdale home design to take care of it. Professional designers and remodelers have the proper tools and resources to keep your job on time and within the appropriate budget you have set. Additionally, if something goes sour, you have recourse. You don’t  get that kind of guarantee with cheap labor.

Helpful Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Many would agree that the kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house because the whole family uses it everyday. Therefore, it is important that it is designed to be comfortable and welcoming. Here are some helpful kitchen design ideas that may help you improve your kitchen and turn it in to the ideal place to enjoy time with family and friends.

The Shortest Way To One’s Heart Is Through Their Stomachs

A famous saying did imply just that and, even if we don’t always agree, it is a fact. For instance, every time one plans an event, it revolves around food. For example, all holidays have specific food dishes, which are usually homemade and that is why they are famous; birthdays, anniversaries and calling friends over for a meal or getting together with family members will almost always involve a meal or at least some snacks.

Most of the food preparation goes on in the kitchen and, therefore, it is important that the kitchen be designed according to the cook’s likes and dislikes. In a family, usually everyone has a say in kitchen or home renovation ideas because, even if they don’t cook, they will spend time in the kitchen eating breakfast and other meals if the dining table is placed in the kitchen

An Inviting Kitchen

A kitchen remodeling idea that the whole family will agree to is that it should be inviting and comfortable. A modern kitchen remodeling idea is to place the dining table in or close to the kitchen, especially if you have a large family, so it will be easy to serve the meals.

Another modern kitchen renovation idea is to have an opening from the kitchen directly into the living room where you have the dining table set and, in that way, when you have guests, you can entertain while cooking or prepare snacks without making your guests feel left out.

Try and design your kitchen in such a way that you have access to natural daylight, which naturally lifts your spirits; and what better way to start your morning then by a natural mood lift from the nature?

If you don’t have natural daylight available, a great kitchen remodeling idea is to install bright, but not too bright, light; light has a natural mood lifting effect on our system and it is recommended, especially in places like the kitchen where you deal with yet another natural mood lifter, which is food.
